Public Distribution System

Introduction

Under the Public Distribution System (PDS), eligible households are entitled to subsidised food – mainly rice or wheat, but in some states the PDS also provides pulses, edible oil and/or other food items. The PDS involves a vast network of local outlets also known as "ration" or “fair price shops”. The National Food Security Act, 2013 defines minimum foodgrain entitlements under the PDS.
